The New Wagnerian

With characteristic decisiveness, Ian Dallas opens his next work, 'The New Wagnerian':

He writes: "Do not be put off by Wagner's bitterly sarcastic critics, or perhaps, yes, do be put off. If you view life as they do, and envy vastness of spirit and profundity of meditative reflection on existence and nature, and surrender to the erotic drive, yes, do turn away. Wagner is not for you."

Once again the book has several layers. Firstly it is an appreciation of the man and his music. It is also the portrait of a visionary ahead of his time, and the social questions which he tackled. And it is a signpost to something beyond Wagner himself. Dallas quotes the great composer thus:

"'Revolution alone can give me the artists and audiences I need.'" Dallas continues: "He said he would convey in his works the meaning of their revolution in its noblest form. Then, he insisted, there would be an audience which could understand him, for his contemporaries could not."

There are far too many different aspects to The New Wagnerian to cover here, but in analysing 'The Ring' he discusses how Wagner depicts the different archetypes of Coupledom, a subject which I shall come to in more detail.

LOWER MANHATTAN — The proposed mosque near Ground Zero is about to get some competition.

Ground Zero

Jewish group says putting a mosque near Ground Zero will cause 'more pain'

Saturday, July 31, 2010

NEW YORK

Putting mosque near Ground Zero is 'not right'

The nation's leading Jewish civil rights group opposes the planned mosque and Islamic community center near Ground Zero, saying more information is needed about funding for the project and the location is "counterproductive to the healing process."

The Anti-Defamation League said it rejects any opposition to the center based on bigotry and acknowledged that the group behind the plan, the Cordoba Initiative, has the legal right to build at the site. But the ADL said "some legitimate questions have been raised" about funding and possible ties with "groups whose ideologies stand in contradiction to our shared values."

"Ultimately this is not a question of rights, but a question of what is right," the ADL said in a statement. "In our judgment, building an Islamic center in the shadow of the World Trade Center will cause some victims more pain -- unnecessarily -- and that is not right." The Cordoba Initiative did not comment Friday.

The mosque and community center would be located two blocks from the Lower Manhattan site of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Reinheidsgebod

Namibia's capital city, Windhoek, is a clean, modern city rising up from the desert. It has all the usual facilities - golf courses, restaurants, shopping and good hotels. Namibia was a German colony, and many of the smaller towns still retain a Teutonic flavour, particularly Swakopmund and Lüderitz on the Atlantic coast. As well as the European-style buildings, you'll find lots of German restaurants and pubs. And - of course - Namibia makes the best beer in Africa, which is most definitely as a result of its German heritage. All Namibian beer conforms to the German Reinheidsgebod (purity law) of 1516. Germans don't muck about when it comes to making (or drinking) beer.

Bournemouth Mosque

Picket against DPP – Solidarity with Ian Tomlinson’s Family EDL members arrested over Bournemouth mosque bomb plot fears

ARMED police opened fire during an operation to arrest members of the controversial far-right English Defence League, who were feared to be masterminding an attack at a Bournemouth mosque.

Marksmen shot the tyres out on a van belonging to John Broomfield, who describes himself as Dorset EDL head, as he drove alone through Corfe Castle.

He and six others were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause an explosion at a Bournemouth mosque.

All seven, including at least six EDL members, have since been released without charge.

Armed officers pounced from an unmarked car close to the Norden roundabout as 27-year-old Mr Broomfield, from Swanage, drove home from work around 5pm.

They used special rapid tyre deflation rounds, fired from a shotgun, to disable his vehicle.

Officers, including specialised forensic experts, then swooped on his Bell Street home, removing clothes, computer equipment, mobile phones and passports.

The suspects were held at Poole police station and a police station in Southampton, following last Thursday’s arrests.

The English Defence League is a contentious group that has been leading “anti-Muslim extremism” demonstrations around England since 2009.

Thousands of people have attended its protests – many of which have involved racist and Islamophobic chanting.

However, organisers insist it is not a racist organisation.

A number of violent clashes have also taken place at EDL demonstrations since the group first emerged in Luton last year.

In a statement to the Daily Echo, Mr Broomfield said: “While travelling home from work I was stopped and arrested by armed police. I was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause an explosion at a Bournemouth mosque.

“Five other members of the EDL were also arrested and held for 24 hours for questioning while searches of their homes took place. Then all of us were released without charge.

“There has been no conspiracy.

“There has never been any conspiracy. The EDL is not a terrorist organisation.”

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “Dorset Police can confirm that as part of an investigation surrounding threats to a Bournemouth mosque a total of seven people were arrested for conspiracy to cause an explosion.

“Following an investigation police can now confirm these people have been released without charge.

“We can also confirm that one of the people arrested was detained safely by armed officers in the Corfe Castle area.

“We’ve been working very closely with the Muslim community since last Thursday and our local safer neighbourhood teams have been providing advice and reassurance throughout.

“At this stage there is no indication whatsoever that any of the mosques in Dorset are under threat of attack.”

Bastille Day

Bastille Day is the French national holiday, celebrated on 14 July each year. In France, it is called "Fête Nationale" ("National Holiday"), in official parlance, or more commonly "quatorze juillet" ("14 July"). It commemorates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789; the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille was seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern French nation, and of the reconciliation of all the French inside the constitutional monarchy which preceded the First Republic, during the French Revolution.

GMOs & Consumer Protection Act

South Africa’s food shelves are stocked with hundreds of products that contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).These are organisms whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques.

Section 24(4) of the CPA (Consumer Protection Act) states that the Minister of Trade and Industry can stipulate categories of “prescribed goods”to be labelled under the CPA, these include “anything marketed for human consumption”.The CPA provides for the indication of the presence of GM ingredients in certain foodstuff through appropriate description on the packaging.

These provisions require Regulations to be drafted by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).Toensure that our rights are protected we call upon all consumers to write to Mr Andisa Potwana at DTI, LAPotwana@thedti.gov.za to support of the following recommendations:That the range of prescribed goods should include the following:• All ingredients in packaged food products that are derived from GM crops (whether or not itcontains any traces of GM materials);• Highly processed products derived from GM ingredients;• Additives and flavourings;• Meat and animal products fed with GM feed;• Food sold by caterers and restaurants and• Unpackaged foods.Further:• Labels should apply to all products that are genetically modified.• A maximum threshold level of 1% should be permitted to allow for the accidental or technically unavoidable GM content.• Products that are produced deliberately and directly using GM processes or have GM content, mustbe clearly labelled as ‘produced using genetic modification’;• A product should only be labelled ‘may contain genetically modified ingredients’ or ‘may be produced using processes of genetic modification’ in circumstances where they contain ingredients that may have come from a GM process and it is not known or feasible to test whether they are GM-free.• GM labelling regulations must define the way the terminology is used and the way it is applied.• Restaurants and food sold direct to the public must clearly indicate any GM content.• Labelling requirements must apply to both local and imported foods and ingredients.• Labelling should include balanced information about the possible adverse effects on human and environmental health.• The biotechnology corporations and the producers who have adopted them have benefited mostfrom GM technology and should bear the costs of segregation, testing and labelling.

The issue of a democratic food system that can provide safe, nutritious and affordable food for all is no less urgent! The information in this fact sheet was taken from the ACB briefing paper:‘Traceability, segregation and labelling of genetically modified products in South Africa’. Oud

Often seen as the predecessor of the western lute, distinguished primarily by being without frets, commonly used in Middle Eastern music, the words "lute" and "Oud" are both speculated to be derived from Arabic العود (al-ʿūd).
The Oud was most likely introduced to Western Europe by the Arabs who established the Umayyad Caliphate of Al-Andalus on the Iberian Peninsula beginning in the year 711 AD.
According to Farabi, the oud was invented by Lamech, the sixth grandson of Adam. The legend tells that the grieving Lamech hung the body of his dead son from a tree. The first oud was inspired by the shape of his son's bleached skeleton...

Busi Mhlongo - We Baba Omncane live@Nantes & Roskilde

Maskanda (or maskandi) is a kind of Zulu folk music that is evolving with South African society. Ethekwini Online describes it as "The music played by the man on the move, the modern minstrel, today’s troubadour. It is the music of the man walking the long miles to court a bride, or to meet with his Chief; a means of transport. It is the music of the man who sings of his real life experiences, his daily joys and sorrows, his observations of the world. It’s the music of the man who’s got the Zulu blues."

Nowadays this is untrue in as much as it is no longer just the domain of men. African women - notably, Busi Mhlongo (October 28, 1947 - June 15, 2010), are also making maskanda music...

NGOisation

"The capital available to NGO's plays the same role in alternative politics as the speculative capital that flows in and out of the economies of the poor countries. It begins to dictate the agenda. It turns confrontation into negotiation. It depoliticises resistance. It interferes with local peoples' movements that have traditionally been self-reliant...The 'NGOisation' of politics threatens to turn resistance into a well-mannered, reasonable, salaried, 9-5 job. With a few perks thrown in."

A Ribat (From the Arabic رباط ribāṭ, hospice, hostel.) is an Arabic term for a small fortification as built along a frontier during the first years of the Muslim conquest of North Africa to house military volunteers, called the Murabitun. These fortifications later served to protect commercial routes, and as centers for isolated Muslim communities.
In time, ribats became hostels for voyagers on major trade routes (Caravanserai) and refuges for mystics. In this last sense, the ribat tradition was perhaps one of the early sources of the Sufi mystic brotherhoods, and a type of the later zaouia or Sufi lodge, which spread into North Africa and from there across the Sahara to West Africa. Here the homes of marabouts (religious teachers, usually Sufi) are termed ribats. Such places of spiritual reteat were termed Khanqah in Persian.

Puritanism
Another aspect of the religious reform is its personal morality: puritanism. This morality places the isolated individual deprived of leadership at the centre of the decision-making or moral judgement. This way of thinking implies a fundamental shift in the approach to the fiqh. When the individual has to decide in isolation, automatically it puts all social issues out of reach. For example, the issue of the restoration of the Dinar and the Dirham, seen from the perspective of the individual, is a non-issue since it requires a whole community for it to be applied. Thus personal morality means that most social issues are abandoned, especially those that carry the highest political or economic weight (equal to their importance). Only the individual belonging to the jama’a can act in these matters and for that, once more the figure of the leader, the Amir becomes necessary.

The GM Issue

The genetic modification of plants as an issue has proved one of the cleverest instruments of transformation by the banking élite. What it veils from the masses is that land is passing from private (farmers’) hands to that of Corporations operating on the other side of the world. The G.M. issue has to resolve itself under the absolutism of the modern, yet the antique selfishness of the land grab will have been brilliantly hidden.

Muslims and the Collapse of the Political Class by Shaykh Dr. Abdalqadir...

The new Aristocracy will stem from what Ibn Khaldun calls the ‘Bedouin’ – not desert Arabs, but peoples not tied into a settled social order. They will embody those qualities upon which all legitimate Aristocracies have always been based: nobility, concern for others, and Divinely revealed religion.
